Pastel was founded in New York City shortly after the attacks of 9/11, recognizing the growing need for direct-to-consumer security technologies. At the time, surveillance was limited to complex and imposing networks of CCTV cameras; the only technologies available were industrial workhorses geared to airports and commercial spaces. But Pastel wanted to offer safety to everyone, without relying on expensive infrastructure or large scale implementation. There had to be a way to allow people to take charge of their own security and protect their homes and offices with usable technology that was geared towards everyday life.
